Denmark’s population is one of the happiest in the world. Have you ever wondered why? It’s because Danes believe in the concept of hygge. For them, it’s not just a word; it’s a way of living which keeps them happy and contented all throughout the year.

    But Wait, What Is Hygge?

How do you feel when you wrap yourself up in your favorite blankie on a particularly chilly night? Or spend time with your loved ones after a delicious meal? You feel good, you reach a state of contentment which relaxes you, calms your brain and your nerves. This is what hygge is all about. You feel extremely safe, comfortable and contented in the environment you are in. In short, you feel good.

Meik Weiking, in his bestselling book,The Little Book of Hygge: The Danish Way to Live Well” looks at this particular Danish concept as a cultural phenomenon. The word, although difficult to translate, is close to the English word, ‘well-being’. It is used as a verb as well as an adjective by the Danes.

So how can you usher in some good old hygge in your life?

     Let's have a look,

    • Make your house a safe haven and don’t bring office work and troubles home. Your home should be the place for relaxation and should be specially for spending time with your loved ones. Invite your family and friends and cook a simple dinner that everyone will enjoy. This would be the perfect hygge evening. But don’t forget, everyone cooks together!

    • Warm lighting in the house will make you feel relaxed. Danes light candles in their homes to usher in the feeling of hygge.

    • Desserts and confectioneries aren’t perceived as comfort foods for nothing! They actually make you feel good when you’re down. Sweet foods like pastries are extremely hygge-inducing. Additionally, home-made jam, pickles and the like usher in hygge too!

    • Make a special, personal nook at a cosy corner in your room. You can light scented candles or turn on essential oil diffusers to calm your mind when you snuggle in to relax there. You can also grab your favorite novel to keep you company!
